Apr, 26 2019Cynthia M1After a rather humiliating and disrespectful prenatal visit with midwife Monica Newby on 3/31 I've not only decided to leave the practice but my husband and I are leaving NC and heading back north. Ms. Newby not only insisted that I receive another Syphilis and HIV test but she threatened me with NC Public Health Law and said there could be issues if I didn't consent. I asked her what the reason was for a repeat of these tests to which she stated, "In my some odd years of practicing I've had many women sit here and assume that something wasn't going on and then test positive for these diseases." She then goes on to state that she wasn't singling me out for any particular reason. My husband and I sat there dumbfounded and he was visibly offended. I reluctantly complied to the blood test because the last thing I need is for her to report me for "not doing what's best" for my baby. To make matters worse she calls us back into the room after the lab work and mentions my weight gain. She asked if I was currently seeing a Nutritionist to which I said yes I am and that I have things under control (normal BP at every appointment, normal BG ranges, tons of energy, no swelling and I eat healthy). She then asked if I drink sugary beverages to which i answered no, because I don't drink sugary beverages. She then further pushes the issue and asked "No kool-aid, sweet teas etc.?" to which at that point I give her a stern no and begin to leave the room. Her comments were disrespectful, discriminatory and rude. My doula (who is a married, white, mother of four) is thoroughly embarrassed that she recommended this midwife to me. She apologized repeatedly and admits that her other white patients and moms are NOT being treated this way by Monica Newby. She (along with other moms) also confirmed that they were NOT threatened into receiving repeated STD testing and that their midwives would never ask them if they drink kool-aid. Shameful. Upon doing light research I read that NC Public Health Law states that a patient should be OFFERED these STD tests during their first and third trimesters. Nowhere does it state that they are mandatory and that the patient faces consequences for not consenting to them. Humiliating. Furthermore, I told her I was concerned with my baby's growth after midwife Debra Hanson said she was measuring small. I called the office prior to my appointment to have one scheduled with my visit but was told to ask Ms. Newby. Instead of receiving one she scheduled me for a return ultrasound in 2 weeks with another provider. Extremely disappointed in the care I received and I will submitting a formal complaint.

Apr, 04 2019kimberly kulp1If I could put a negative star here I would!! I’m currently pregnant and getting seen at this doctors office and this is my first pregnancy. And everyone I have meet has been nice to me but the midwife explained to me that I’ll never meet my doctor until the day of delivery and that I’ll meet two other midwives. Your a number to these people. As a first time mom I want to have a relationship with a nurse and the doctor who is going to be delivering my baby instead I am told that no one who is providing care for me now will assist me during the whole duration of this pregnancy or the delivery they will just send me off to Viadent and expect their staff to care for me. Unfortunately I can’t buy my own health insurance but that doesn’t mean that I shouldn’t have a relationship with the nurse or doctor who will be doing the delivery. We should all be treated the same and every time I go to my appointments I see someone different it’s never the same person and it’s very upsetting and disappointing. Because no one else in Greenville NC will take me after I have my baby I will never go here ever again!!!!
